Family Agreements at Every Stage

Narrow Focus. Deep Expertise. Real Protection.

Freedom Family Law was founded on a simple but powerful belief: most family law conflicts are preventable. We help BC couples build strong legal foundations that protect their love, their assets, and their future.

Our Mission

Agreements, Not Courtrooms

We believe the best outcomes in family law happen by agreement, not in front of a judge. Whether you’re planning ahead while things are good or parting ways and want to keep it amicable, a clear, fair agreement costs a fraction of litigation — in money, time, and emotional toll.

Our entire practice is dedicated to family agreements at every stage of a relationship: prenuptial, cohabitation, postnuptial, common-law, and separation agreements, plus document preparation for uncontested divorces. We don’t litigate — by keeping our focus narrow, we go deep on the details that actually protect you.

The Team

Meet Mathais & Zoe

Mathais Sarrazin — Barrister & Solicitor

Hi, I’m Mathais, founder of Freedom Family Law. I graduated from UVic Law in 2012 and was called to the BC Bar in 2013. My early career provided extensive courtroom experience in criminal defence and family law, including running Supreme Court trials just months after being called to the Bar.

What I learned from all that time in courtrooms: most of the suffering I witnessed was preventable. Families were being torn apart, children caught in the middle, life savings consumed by legal fees — all because couples hadn’t planned ahead when things were good. That realization changed everything for me.

Zoe — Designated Paralegal

Zoe plays a key role in making your experience smooth and stress-free. She handles the initial consultation, answers questions, and ensures communication is seamless — so you always know what’s happening next.

Between Mathais and Zoe, you always have someone reliable to reach out to. Emails are typically answered the same day, including evenings and weekends.

What It Feels Like

Real People. Real Clarity.

Family agreements get a bad reputation because most lawyers treat them like an adversarial exercise. We treat them like what they actually are: a chance for two people who care about each other to sit down, make their plans explicit, and walk away knowing exactly where they stand.

Most clients leave their first call already feeling lighter — not because we sold them anything, but because someone finally explained what BC law actually says about their situation in plain English.

Our Approach

How We Work With You

  • We take the time to understand your situation

Every couple is different. Your agreement should reflect your specific needs and circumstances, not a fill-in-the-blank template.

  • Communication is a priority

We respond to emails quickly — often in the evenings and on weekends — because we work around your schedule, not just our office hours.

  • Transparent, predictable pricing

Flat fees for drafted agreements and our divorce package, with clear hourly rates for advice, revisions, and negotiation. You know exactly how billing works before we start.

  • Remote-first across British Columbia

Most of the process happens by phone, video, and secure document exchange. We serve clients across BC, from Vancouver Island to the Interior, without making you drive to an office.
